Prevention in Action: Kalpavriksham’s Decade of Community-Driven Cancer Care

Date :09-Aug-2025

A decade ago, cancer awareness in rural Tamil Nadu was fragmented and often too late to change outcomes. Underprivileged families didn’t know about prevention strategies, free screenings, or life-saving vaccines. Symptoms only became visible at advanced stages, making treatment prohibitively expensive and survival uncertain.

Kalpavriksham, under the leadership of Dr Banupriya, supported by Dr Manikandan, stepped into that gap in 2011. Our mission: shift from cure-centric care to a prevention-first approach. Every village visit, school/college talk, and community camp is driven by one goal—empowering people with knowledge and early-detection tools before cancer takes hold.

The impact so far:
- 30,447 people educated on cancer prevention, detection, vaccines, and treatment
- 2,650 beneficiaries screened through mobile mammograms and Pap smears in free camps
- 493 individuals protected with free HPV vaccinations
- 1,301 mammograms and 1,349 Pap smear tests conducted
- 14 new cancers detected at an early, highly treatable stage
- 752 families supported with curative cancer care assistance

Behind each number is a life transformed: a woman diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer and on the road to recovery; a teenager HPV-vaccinated before risk ever arose; a family spared the financial and emotional toll of late-stage treatment.

Cancer can be beaten—but only if we find it first. At Kalpavriksham, prevention isn’t an afterthought; it’s our lifeblood.

Let’s catch cancer early—together.
